QURBAANI

A DIVINE FEAST FOR THE BELIEVERS

Qurbaani, the sacrifice of animals in the name of Allah Ta’ala, is an everlasting memorial and remembrance of Sayyidina Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam), which Allah Ta’ala has implemented on the Ummah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

Furthermore, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has emphatically encouraged it through his actions as well as sayings by specifically mentioning many virtues regarding Qurbaani. As Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is reported to have stated:

"Sacrifice animals in the name of Allah because it was the practice of your forefather Nabi Ibrahim Allahi Salaam.”

In another narration Hadhrat Aisha (Radhiallahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) stated that:

“on the Day of Eid-ul-Adha there is no action more beloved to Allah Ta’ala than that of Qurbaani. The person who carries out the act of Qurbaani will appear on the Day of Qiyaamah with the horns, hair and hooves of his/her sacrificed animal; and before the blood of the animal touches the ground it is accepted by Allah Ta’ala. Therefore make your souls happy by performing Qurbaani.” (Tirmidhi & Ibn Maajah)

Hadhrat Zaid bin Arqam (Radhiallahu Anha) reports that once the companions of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked,

"0 Rasul of Allah! What is this Qurbaani?" Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “lt is the practice of your forefather Ibrahim (Allahi Salaam). The companions then asked, "What do we benefit from it, 0 Rasul of Allah?" He answered, "A reward in place of every hair of the animal!" The companions thereafter inquired, "What if the animal has wool?" Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, "A reward in place of every fibre of wool of the animal!" (Musnad-e-Ahmad & Ibn Maajah)

From the above mentioned virtues, it is very clear that Qurbaani is an eminent and important act of virtue.

The correct method of performing Qurbani as mentioned in the Ahaadeeth is as follows:

• It is preferable to make the animal lie down in such a manner that its face is towards the Qiblah.  Thereafter, the following Dua'a should be recited:

• Then    بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ   should be read. The animal should be slaughtered with a sharp knife ensuring that all of its four veins are cut. Thereafter, the following Dua should be recited:
اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّي كَمَا تَقَبَّلْت مِنْ حَبِيْبِكَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ خَلِيلِك إبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِمَا الصَّلَوةُ وَالسَّلآم

A few important guidelines pertaining to Qurbaani:

• It is preferable that the animal should be big in size, fat and good looking because it will be a means of conveyance in the Hereafter. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is reported to have stated: “Fatten the animals that you slaughter, because they will be your conveyance on the Bridge of Siraat."

• It is also preferable to slaughter on the first day of Qurbaani  which is the l0th of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Eid.

• Eminent Fuqahaa (scholars) have written that it is preferable to slaughter during the day, while slaughtering at night is regarded as Makrooh (abominable).

• Special care should be taken that before slaughtering, the knife should be thoroughly sharpened.

• It is more virtuous to wait a little while after the actual slaughtering so that the animal may calm down, its soul may depart completely and so that every part of its body may come to rest. The Fuqahaa have written that to skin the animal before this is Makrooh (abominable).

• A person should partake from his/her own Qurbaani because it is an invitation from Allah that must not be rejected. (Badaai-us-Sanaai)

Qurbaani is not merely a custom or an ordinary action that should be disregarded or rejected. However, according to the Hanafi Scholars it is Waajib (incumbent) upon every such person who is a Sahib-e-Nisaab (liable to pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr) to perform the noble act of Qurbaani.

This is so because Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has expressed denunciation for that person who does not make Qurbaani. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said:

"The person, who despite having the means does not slaughter, must not even come close to our Eidgaah (place of Eid Salaah)." (ibn Majah)

In conclusion, the fundamental purpose of Qurbaani is to obey the commandment of Allah Ta’ala with total sincerity and affection. May Allah Ta’ala include us amongst his pious and obedient servants. AMEEN

Q & A from DARUL IFTAA

Question:
Is it permissible to slaughter sheep whose tails have been cut off?

Answer: The Muftiyan al-Kiram (official expounders of Islamic Law) have maintained various rulings regarding the slaughtering of sheep whose tails have been cut off.

Some present-day scholars are of the opinion that it is not permissible to slaughter such animals and have based their verdicts on the texts of earlier Fuqahah al-Kiram (scholars of Jurisprudence) whilst some scholars have given the Fatwa (religious verdict) of permissibility on the basis of Urf (social customs and habits) and meteorological conditions of South Africa.

Therefore, whilst considering the expertise of reliable veterinarians and Urf (social custom) it has been deduced that such animals are not defective but are rather considered as better-quality animals and suitable for slaughtering.

Yes, as a precautionary measure one should try to slaughter those animals whose tails are intact.

Hadhrat Mufti Rasheed Ahmad Ludhianwi Sahib (R.A.) had issued the following Fatwa: "The intactness of the sheep's tail has no relevance (regarding its suitability for slaughtering). Therefore, even if the entire tail has been cut-off then too its slaughter will be permissible."  (Ahsanul Fatawa: 5/517)
