Question: Are the different fertility treatments prevalent today permissible in Islam?

Answer: The reply to your query with regards to fertility treatments is as follows:

Artificial Insemination, In Vitro Fertilisation(IVF) and Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer(GIFT) is only permissible in extremely unavoidable situations i.e. when the wife is unable to fall pregnant in the normal and natural way after the couple had tried alternative medical treatment. If after trying alternative treatment the couple are still unable to have children, then the above mentioned treatment can be resorted to, on condition that the sperm to be used is only that of the husband and the eggs and womb are that of the wife. To use the sperm of any donor other than the husband or to use the eggs and womb of any women other than the wife is totally prohibited and a major sin. Therefore such treatment should only be resorted to in compelled and unavoidable circumstances. Without the necessity, one should avoid such treatments.
