THE THIRD KHALIFAH, BEARER OF HONOUR
HAZRAT SAYYIDINA UTHMAAN ZUN NOORAYN
(RADHIALLAHU ANHU)

Name: Uthmaan bin Affaan

Lineage:
His lineage meets with Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam at the fifth forefather.

Relationship to Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam: Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam’s father’s sister Ummi Hakeem bint Abdul Muttalib’s daughter was his mother. In other words he was Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam’s cousin’s son.

Title: Dhun-Noorayn “Owner of Two Lights”. Two of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam’s daughters were given to him in marriage, when the one passed away he was given the other in marriage by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Thus he is known by the title of “Owner of Two Lights”.

ACCEPTANCE OF ISLAM:

On the invitation of Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu), he brought Islam long before Hazrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) and a day before Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Jarraah and Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf (Radhiallahu Anhumma).

GENEROSITY AND COMPASSION:

•    He was such an exemplary of generosity for Islam and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, that no equal could be found.
•    After his unparalleled generosity on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “If after today Uthmaan (also mistakenly) does a wrong, then Allah will change it into a virtue.”
•    At the time of the battle of Badr, he was instructed to remain in Madina Munawwara by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam to take care of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam’s daughter who was very ill. Apart from this, he participated in every battle with Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

VIRTUES AND EXCELLENCENCES OF HAZRAT SAYYIDINA UTHMAAN (RADHIALLAHU ANHU):

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “The Angels in the skies also show modesty (hayaa) in front of Hazrat Uthmaan (Radhiallahu Anhu).
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “There will be a Fitna (corruption) in Madina, and on that day Utmaan will be on Haq (truth).”
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whoever desires to see a Jannati (person of jannat), look at Uthmaan.”

THE KHILAAFAT OF SAYYIDINA UTHMAAN (RADHIALLAHU ANHU):

•    After the martyrdom of Hazrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu), on the decision of the ‘Consultative Committee’, he was elected as the Khalifa.

•    Khurasaan, Taws, Herat, Shiraaz and the remainder section of Iran were all brought under the rule of Islam, during his reign.

MARTYRDOM (SHAHAADAT)
:

•    In the whole history of Islam, no one was martyred so cruelly as was Hazrat Uthmaan.
•    The rebels of Egypt had made Hazrat Uthmaan starve for forty days, without food and drink, before cruelly murdering him in the neighbourhood of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
•    His blessed corpse was left lying unattended and not buried for three days, by the rebels.
•    These rebels threw stones at his Janaazah (funeral bier).
•    He is buried in ‘Jannatul Baqee’.
•    After the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthmaan, darkness spread in the History of Islam, as swords were caused to be withdrawn from their sheaths.
•    Hazrat Uthmaan Radhiallahu Anhu was martyred on a Friday, 18 Zil Hijjah 35 A.H. in Madina Munawwara. He was busy reciting the Qur’aan Kareem and the first drops of his blood fell on the Qur’aan Kareem. He was busy fasting when he was mercilessly martyred.
•    He was 82 years old at that time.
•    Sa’eed bin Zayd (Radhiallahu Anhu) says: “If the mount Uhad had to move from its place due to the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthmaan, then it would be Haq (truth).”
•    Hazrat Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) relates: “On the day that Hazrat Uthmaan was martyred, my senses stopped functioning and my whole life was filled with grief.”
•    Upon the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthmaan, Hazrat Zayd bin Thaabit (Radhiallahu Anhu) cried for the whole day.

May Allah Ta'ala grant us the taufeeq of honouring these great Sahaba of Islam and may he able us to follow in their pious footsteps.
