The birth of Hadrat ‛Alī in the Ka‛bah

Question: Was Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu born in the Ka‛bah? Which Sahābī was born in the Ka‛bah and what was his mother’s name?

Answer: There is just one Sahābī by the name of Hakīm ibn Hizām radiyallāhu ‛anhu who was born in the Ka‛bah. Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was not born in the Ka‛bah. Rather, he was born close to where Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‛alayhi wa sallam was born, in a place called Sūq al-Layl.

‛Alī ibn Ghanām said: Hakīm ibn Hizam was born inside the Ka‛bah. His mother entered the Ka‛bah and experienced labour pains there, so she gave birth in the Ka‛bah.

Imām Nawawī rahimahullāh writes in his commentary to Muslim Sharīf:

One of his merits is that he was born inside the Ka‛bah. The ‛ulamā’ say: We do not know of anyone else who enjoys the same distinction.

Sharh al-Muhadh-dhab states:

Hakīm ibn Hizām radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born inside the Ka‛bah. It is not established if anyone else was born in it.

Al-Badr al-Munīr states:

…As for the narration claiming that ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born in it, this is a weak narration…

Al-Ikmāl states:

The following is mentioned in al-Istī‛āb:

There are some scholars who wrote – without any chain of transmission – that Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born inside the Ka‛bah. In fact, Imām Hākim rahimahullāh says that it is proven through innumerable narrations that he was born inside the Ka‛bah.

The text of Mustadrak-e-Hākim reads as follows:

In addition to this, ‛Allāmah Fākihī (d. 275 A.H.) writes in Akhbār Makkah:

‛Alī was the first to be born inside the Ka‛bah from the Banū Hāshim.

At-Tārīkh al-Qawīm makes reference to the place where Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born:

‛Alī ibn Abī Tālib was born in Makkah in Sūq al-Layl at the top of the pass. The place of his birth is close to where Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‛alayhi wa sallam was born. The distance between the two places is less than 200 metres.

The Shī‛ah book, I‛lām al-Warā li A‛lām al-Hudā of Abū ‛Alī al-Fadl ibn al-Husayn at-Tabrisī, states that Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born inside the Ka‛bah. Similarly, Manāqib ‛Alī ibn Abī Tālib of Ibn al-Maghāzī states that Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born inside the Ka‛bah. However, its chain of transmission is not reliable.

As-Sīrah al-Halabīyyah states:

(Arabic text-p. 132)

As regards the name of Hadrat Hakīm ibn Hizām’s mother, Tahdhīb al-Kamāl states:

His mother is Umm Hakīm Fākhitah bint Zuhayr ibn al-Hārith…

Al-Isābah states:

His mother’s name is Safīyyah. Others say that it is Fākhitah or Zaynab bint Zuhayr…

Summary

It is learnt from the above narrations that only one Sahābī was born inside the Ka‛bah, and he is Hakīm ibn Hizām radiyallāhu ‛anhu. His mother’s name is Fākhitah bint Zuhayr. The view that Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was born inside the Ka‛bah is extremely weak. It is essentially the view of some Shī‛ahs, but even their noteworthy books such as Usūl al-Kāfī and others do not make mention of it. Our ‛ulamā’ say that the correct view is that Hadrat ‛Alī radiyallāhu ‛anhu was not born inside the Ka‛bah but at a place called Sūq al-Layl which is close to where Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‛alayhi wa sallam was born. Allāh ta‛ālā knows best.
