RECITATION OF THE QUR’AAN KAREEM IN TARAWEEH SALAAH

±1 PARA (JUZ)
● The Khaleefah, Umar bin Abdul Azeez (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh) used to instruct the Imaams to recite at least 10 aayaat of the Qur’aan Kareem in every Raka’aat of Taraweeh.
This roughly amounts to completing 1 Khatam during the month of Ramadhaan.
(Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah 2/284)

±2 PARAS (JUZ)
● This was the approximate amount recited by ‘Abdurrahmaan bin Abi Bakrah, Sa’eed bin Abil Hasan and ‘Imraan ‘Abdi (rahmatullaahi ‘alayhim).
They used to complete 2 Khatams in the Taraweeh Salaah.
(Mukhtasar qiyaamil layl-qiyaam ramadhaan pg.12)

±3 PARAS (JUZ)
● This was the approximate amount recited daily in Taraweeh by the famous Taabi’ee, Sa’eed bin Jubayr (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh), who was made Shaheed (martyred) by Hajjaaj bin Yusuf in 95 A.H.
This roughly amounts to completing 3 Khatams in the Taraweeh Salaah. (Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah 2/284; 286)

±4¼ PARA’S (JUZ) DAILY
● Abu Mijlaz (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh), a Taabi’ee (passed away around 106 A.H.) used to lead the congregation in all 20 Raka’aat of Taraweeh by himself. He used to make a khatam of the Qur’aan in Taraweeh Salaah once every 7 nights!
(Mukhtasar qiyamil layl-qiyaam ramadhaan pg.11; Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah 2/284)

● Another Taabi’ee, Basheer bin Naheek (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh), (passed away 105 A.H.) had the same practice of completing a Khatam once every 7 nights in Taraweeh Salaah!
(Mukhtasar qiyaamil layl-qiyaam ramadhaan pg.12)

±5¾ PARAS (JUZ)
● Ibn Abi Mulaikah (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh), a Taabi’ee, (passed away in 117 A.H.), used to be Imaam for the entire 20 raka’aat. He used to recite as long as Surah Faatir in one rak’at.

He adds: Nobody ever told me that any of the Muqtadee’s (followers) find it too long!

The amount recited in one rak’at by Ibn Abi Mulaikah, when multiplied by the 20 raka’aat he used to perform, amounts to approximately 5¾ paras!
(Rigorously authenticated-Musannaf ibn abi shaybah- 2/284-(7764) bisanad saheeh-aathaarus sunan pg.254)

● Imaam A’raj (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh), a Taabi’ee, (passed away in 117 A.H.) says:
The Imaam used to recite the entire Surah Baqarah over 8 raka’aat, (which amounts to approximately 5¾ paras over 20 raka’aat).
He adds:
This was the normal practice. The day the Imaam spread Surah Baqarah over 12 Raka’aat, (which amounts to approximately 4 paras over the 20 raka’aat) the people would say that the Imaam read a short Taraweeh today!
(Muwatta Imaam Maalik-awjazul masaalik 2/307)

This roughly amounts to completing 6 Khatams during the month of Ramadhaan.

±7¾ PARAS (JUZ)
● Imaam Masrooq (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh), a Taabi’ee, (passed away in 62 A.H.) recited the entire Surah ‘Ankaboot in one rak’at. When multiplied by 20 raka’aat, it amounts to ±7¾ paras!

This roughly amounts to completing almost 8 Khatams during the month of Ramadhaan.
(Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah 2/284)

So the day you are feeling tired or a little lazy, just think of the lengthy Taraweeh Salaah of your pious predecessors!

(Imaamul Uloom)
